Need a gift for a writer?
I've gotten pretty good at outside-the-box ideas for author gifts. Here are my Top 12 ideas:
A Christmas ornament of all their books! A friend got me one of these last year and it melted my whole heart. You can also get them for readers (favorite books) or cover designers or editors (books they've worked on).
Etsy seller MegsComfortCreations or SMZHDLTD
Commission art of their characters - Authors LOVE this, and it works for not-yet-published books. For bonus points, pull the character descriptions right from their book so you know it'll be right!
Consult calls with a freelance editor (or a query letter critique or first 10 pages critique) to show you tangibly support their dreams! Link HERE to browse those.
Put their Publisher's Marketplace deal announcement or agent-signing tweet on a mug or in a frame! Try CafePress for this.
Charm bracelet or keychain of symbols from their books
For instance, I did one of a cowboy boot, a motorcycle and a heart for Katie Golding's cowboy motorcycle racing romance! This is a good one for published OR not-yet-published books. Etsy has many options for custom charms.
Agent consult call from Manuscript Academy. Did you know you can talk to a real live agent?
Magnet or mug with a quote from their book or with their book cover on it.
Framed book cover, award, or trade review
Wooden replica of a book - Technically it's a cutting board, but it looks like a book and they can even match your cover font! CuttingBoredom on Etsy
Writing craft books - here are 10 of my favorites. Big Magic and Embrace Your Weird are my top picks for being supportive and energizing. Story Genius and Save the Cat are my top picks for craft knowledge.
11. If your writer needs support in getting writing time or community to help them achieve their goals, grab them a spot in the JaNoWriMo group for this January!
It includes group coaching Q&As and a whole month of craft tips and pep talks from a certified book coach.
Make your own mini-ornament of their book cover - instructions courtesy of authors A.D. Lynn and Amy Lanham.
Or make a commemorative ornament for any milestone: First book completed? First agent? First series wrapped up?
Etsy sellers CelestialGiftz or ElianasCorner for this!
Basically, if they have a book cover or deal announcement, put it on something collectible for them! If they're not-yet-published, either buy them a gift that helps them get there, or pull symbols, characters, or special moments from their book to celebrate the world they've created!
